Switching from a Full-Face Mask (Resmed Quattro FX) to a Nasal Pillow (RespCare Aloha)

Standard

Aloha

I’ve been sleeping with a CPAP device for several years and during the entire time I’ve always used a full-face mask. It’s worked alright but I still have several bad nights every now and then along with several moderate sleep nights. I know what it’s like to have great sleep so I’ve been aware for a while that perhaps it was time to try something new.

GE 45603 Z-Wave Technology Wireless Lighting Control Fluorescent Light and Appliance Module

Standard

ZWave-Lamp-Module

Earlier this week I replaced two X10 modules in my Man Cave. I replaced an X10 slimline wall remote with a Z-Wave remote. As part of this replacement I also swapped out an X10 appliance module with a new GE 45603 Z-Wave Technology Wireless Lighting Control Fluorescent Light and Appliance Module. The appliance module was in the typical cost range for a Z-Wave module of about $40.

The two modules work great together and I haven’t had any problems since I installed them. I can reliably control the connected lamp for the first time since I added home automation modules to this room.

The module includes two outlets. One is for Z-Wave control and the other is a pass-through to power another non-controlled device. It includes a manual on-/off button as well. In the photo you may notice that the power outlet is installed sideways. This is another side effect of owning an older home. Typically, in a house with a power outlet aligned vertically, both outlets on the module would be perpendicular to the floor. This is intended to free up the other outlet but whether or not this actually happens will depend on the size of the power plug used by another device in the other outlet.

Olive Garden Dressing

Standard

The last time we dropped by an Olive Garden to eat we picked up two bottles of the salad dressing to take home. We both really like it and have had several salads since so it was nearly gone. As luck would have it, I decided to look for some at Wal-Mart and sure enough I spotted a bottle. As far as I can tell it’s the same dressing but it costs less and is slightly larger (about $5 at the Olive Garden and around $3.50 at Wal-Mart).

In the photo below the bottle we purchased from the Olive Garden is on the left (nearly empty). The full bottle was purchased at Wal-Mart.

Moving from mControl 3 (Windows) to Indigo 6 (OS X) for Home Automation

Standard

Indigo-6

The Short Version: I moved VPN, home automation control, and video recording from an ASUS eeeBox PC (Windows) to my iMac (OS X Mountain Lion). VPN was changed from PPTP to L2TP using iVPN to control the server. Video recording is with the same program (Vitamin D Video Pro) using the same license. mControl was dropped and I’m now using Indigo 6 to control everything.

For home automation control I’ve been running mControl over the past few years. The development team rarely updated the software but rather than invest in a different package I went ahead and upgraded to version 3 when it was released. The software was running on an ASUS system I had setup at the house for managing home automation and security video recording.
