Update: I’ve removed the direct Amazon links for these two Vizomax products because the 42 inch and 55 inch versions do not appear to be available, at this time, and instead of providing an error the links were taking visitors to the wrong size of and type of screen protector. For now, I recommend visiting the Vizomax website itself or searching directly on Amazon to see if the desired size is available.
Last summer I purchased the largest TV we’ve had in our house; a 55-inch LCD. In addition, it also supported 4K HDR. Over the course of a few weeks we eventually picked up a couple of 4K movies including Planet Earth 2 and I already had some games that could take advantage of the TV’s high quality. I splurged on this TV and spent $600. Granted, one could easily spend much more but for us it was a stretch.
We were able to enjoy the TV for several months, until one day in late November or early December. On this day our toddler became angry about something that was probably very insignificant in the grand scheme of things (at the time he was almost two and a half so, as with most toddlers his age, anything could upset him). I don’t recall what it was though he probably wanted to go outside to the playground. If that was the case then I wouldn’t have let him because it was dark outside or because we were preparing to eat. He didn’t mind using the word “no” but he did not like to have it said to him.
I turned around and went back to the kitchen where I was preparing some food and putting up dishes. I just happen to be looking his way when I saw him angrily pickup a Christmas decoration from our coffee table. It was a wooden, triangular Christmas tree-shaped piece. He threw it at the TV. Hard.
I didn’t need to see the TV to know what had happened. I could see it on my wife’s face. I was so angry in that moment that rather than attempt to impose any form of discipline I simply walked back into the kitchen and continued doing what I was doing. His mother handled the discipline that night.
The hit from the decoration shattered a part of the screen with several cracks leading off into different directions. It was toast.
Yet, there was a reason that I didn’t place all of the blame at his feet. The night that I purchased the TV I considered placing some plexiglass in front of the TV or checking to see if anyone made a shield to protect a TV screen from impacts. I didn’t follow up on that thought.
Well, that’s not entirely true. I did follow up on it but only after losing an expensive TV.
We decided to shuffle our existing TVs around. When I purchased the 55-inch TV we had a 42-inch in our living room and a 32-inch in our bedroom. The 42-inch when to our bedroom and the 32-inch to the guest room. So after this little disaster we weren’t hurting for TVs. I moved the 42-inch back into the living room but this did not happen until I had a TV shield. I wasn’t going to lose the 42-inch TV as well.
Vizomax makes TV shields for various display sizes that are manufactured to not only be resistant to shock put to also maintain the quality of the screen that sits behind it as much as possible. They’re not inexpensive. The 42-inch version that I purchased (I’ve included an Amazon link but I actually had to purchase that size direct from Vizomax at the time) runs $90 and the 55-inch one that I ordered and received this week (my awesome wife purchased a replacement 55-inch TV as a birthday present) runs close to $190.
But I’d much rather have to replace a shield instead of an entire TV.
Each shield covers the TV screen with a slight overlap over the bezel. The models may vary slightly. The 42-inch one that I’ve installed has a safety strap to ensure it doesn’t slide off as well as some small bumpers. It also comes with some adhesive strips but I didn’t find a need for those; the safety strap itself does a good job of keeping it in place.
When I ordered the 42-inch one in December it arrived damaged. The box it was shipped in was beaten to hell and back but the delivery driver didn’t hang around long enough for me to see it before he left. Upon opening it I discovered a significant crack as well as the area where the safety strap was supposed to go completely separated from the screen. I contacted Vizomax and provided some photos. They responded promptly and were very courteous. They apologized and assured me that they’d send a replacement at no additional charge. They didn’t have any in stock so the replacement couldn’t arrive until January.
Surprisingly the damaged screen protector actually worked well. I went ahead and moved the 42-inch out to the living room and mounted it (as well as I could considering the damage) and realized that it wouldn’t fall off easily; my son would have to hit the TV hard to knock it down. The large crack wasn’t very noticeable when the TV was actually on.
True to their word I did receive the replacement screen protector and it arrived in excellent condition and is mounted on our 42-inch TV, which will soon be relocated to our bedroom once we picked up the replacement 55-inch TV (I’m calling it a replacement but the original TV warranty did not cover the kind of accidental damage that our son caused. My wife purchased a new TV for me. The old one that our son busted had to be trashed).
The new 55 inch TV shield appears to be in good shape and I’m hoping to be using it very soon. I’m confident that the other shield has, minimally, saved our TV from permanent scratches and possibly prevented catastrophic damage.
I didn’t go out of my way to produce photos for this post because, frankly, there isn’t much to see. The shields blend in well with the TVs.
